Where the golden ram symbol comes from

In Greek myth, the golden ram Chrysomallos was sent by the gods to rescue the children Phrixus and Helle from their scheming stepmother. Helle fell into the sea during the flight (giving her name to the Hellespont strait), but Phrixus reached safety in Colchis, where he sacrificed the ram in gratitude and hung its fleece in a sacred grove. That fleece became the Golden Fleece of the later Jason and the Argonauts myth — meaning the constellation Aries is, in effect, the ram whose skin the entire Argonaut quest was built around.

As a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars — the planet of drive, conflict, and raw energy — Aries is traditionally read as the zodiac's initiator: bold, competitive, and quick to act, sometimes before fully thinking things through.
