Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 22, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information CosmicByMe ("we", "our", "the site") collects when you use the card generator and this website, and how that information is used.
1. Information you provide
When you generate a card, you enter a birth date, an optional birth time, an optional signature/message, and optionally share your location (via the "GPS" button or by leaving it at the default). This information is used entirely in your browser to:
- Look up the day's NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day,
- Render your birth-sky star map, and
- Calculate your Five-Element (Ohaeng) Saju reading.
Your birth date, birth time, signature text, and location are not sent to or stored on our servers. The finished card image is drawn entirely on an HTML canvas inside your own browser and downloaded directly to your device — it is never uploaded anywhere.
2. Information collected automatically
Our server (which proxies requests to NASA's public API on your behalf) temporarily notes your IP address to enforce a fair-use rate limit on card generation. This is kept in memory only, is never written to disk or a database, and is automatically discarded after a short window. We do not otherwise log or store visitor IP addresses.
3. Location data
If you click the "GPS" button, your browser will ask your permission to share your location, per the standard browser Geolocation API. If you allow it, the coordinates are used locally in your browser to adjust the star map and are never transmitted to our server. If you decline or skip this step, a default location (Seoul, South Korea) is used instead.
4. Third-party services
To generate a card, your browser loads resources from the following third parties:
- NASA APOD API — proxied through our server; only a calendar date is sent, no personal data.
- Unsplash — used as a fallback image for birth dates before June 16, 1995 (NASA APOD's start date).
- Google Fonts — loads font files for the site's typography.
- jsDelivr CDN — hosts the open-source libraries (d3.js, d3-celestial, lunar-javascript) used to render the star map and calculate the Saju reading.
Each of these services may independently log standard web request data (such as your IP address) according to their own privacy policies, which we don't control.
5. Cookies and advertising
CosmicByMe may display advertisements served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. This can include the use of Google's DoubleClick cookie to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the Internet.
You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also learn more about how Google uses data at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, ads may only be personalized after you provide consent through a consent management prompt, in line with Google's EU User Consent Policy.
6. Data retention
Because we don't collect or store your birth date, birth time, location, or generated card, there is nothing on our servers to retain or delete on your behalf. Any data mentioned in Section 5 above is retained and controlled by Google, not by us.
7. Children's privacy
CosmicByMe is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
