Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, covering June 21 through July 22. Its symbol is a crab, and astronomically it's the dimmest constellation in the entire zodiac — no star in it rises much past magnitude 3.5. What Cancer lacks in bright stars, though, it makes up for with the Beehive Cluster, a naked-eye star cluster sitting almost exactly at its center.

Where the crab symbol comes from

In Greek myth, the crab appears during Heracles's second labor — his battle with the multi-headed Hydra. Hera, no fan of Heracles, sent a crab to distract him mid-fight by pinching at his feet. Heracles simply crushed it underfoot without much trouble. Hera, apparently moved by its effort even in failure, placed the crab among the stars anyway — making Cancer one of the rare constellations honored for losing rather than winning.

The cluster that outshines the crab

Sitting almost exactly in the middle of the constellation is the Beehive Cluster (also called Praesepe, or M44) — an open cluster of young stars that appears to the naked eye as a soft, hazy patch, and resolves into dozens of individual stars through binoculars. It's been recognized since antiquity, well before anyone understood what star clusters actually were, and remains far easier to spot than the faint crab-shape surrounding it.
