Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac, covering December 22 through January 19. Its symbol is unique among the twelve signs: a hybrid creature, goat from the head to the ribs and fish from the ribs down. In the sky, it's also one of the faintest zodiac constellations — a wide, shallow triangle of dim stars that all but disappears under any real light pollution.

Where the goat-fish symbol comes from

The most commonly told origin is Greek: during the gods' battle with the monster Typhon, the wilderness god Pan (or more specifically Aegipan) is said to have dived into the Nile to escape. The part of him underwater transformed into a fish tail, the part still above stayed goat, and Zeus placed the resulting hybrid shape among the stars.

The symbol itself predates that story by over a thousand years, however. Babylonian astronomers had already charted a goat-fish figure in this part of the sky, associated with Enki (Ea), their god of fresh water, wisdom, and craftsmanship — a river-and-sea deity fittingly rendered as a creature that belongs to both land and water. The Greek myth was layered onto an older sky, not the origin of it.

What Capricorn is said to represent

As a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn — the planet associated with structure, discipline, and long timelines — Capricorn is traditionally linked to ambition, patience, and practicality, sometimes read as guardedness. It's most associated with the long, unglamorous climb toward a goal rather than the goal itself, echoing its own symbol: a goat working its way up a mountain.

The fish tail is talked about less, but fits the same picture from the other direction. If the goat half is the disciplined, achievement-oriented surface, the tail is what stays submerged — the emotional depth underneath a composed exterior. Read together, the two halves describe a sign that's capable and controlled above the waterline, with considerably more going on beneath it.

Why Capricorn is hard to see in the night sky

Capricornus has no star brighter than magnitude 2.9, which puts its entire shape below what's easily visible from most cities.
