Where the scales symbol comes from — and the claws hiding in the name

Libra's two main stars carry a giveaway in their Arabic names: Zubenelgenubi means "the southern claw," and Zubeneschamali means "the northern claw." That's because these stars originally belonged to Scorpius, representing the scorpion's outstretched claws, before Roman astronomers split them off into a separate constellation. The scales were then layered on as a new symbol — commonly tied to Astraea (or Dike), the goddess of justice, who is more fully depicted as Virgo right next door, holding the scales Libra represents.
