Libra: Dates, Meaning, and the Scales Explained

The scales zodiac sign โ€” its dates, symbol, mythology, and the odd astronomical history hiding in its star names.

Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac, covering September 23 through October 22. Its symbol is a set of balance scales โ€” the only zodiac sign represented by an object rather than a person or animal. That's not incidental: the scales weren't originally their own constellation at all.

Libra dates and basic facts

Where the scales symbol comes from โ€” and the claws hiding in the name

Libra's two main stars carry a giveaway in their Arabic names: Zubenelgenubi means "the southern claw," and Zubeneschamali means "the northern claw." That's because these stars originally belonged to Scorpius, representing the scorpion's outstretched claws, before Roman astronomers split them off into a separate constellation. The scales were then layered on as a new symbol โ€” commonly tied to Astraea (or Dike), the goddess of justice, who is more fully depicted as Virgo right next door, holding the scales Libra represents.

What Libra is said to represent

As a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, Libra is traditionally associated with balance, diplomacy, and a strong pull toward fairness and aesthetic harmony โ€” genuinely uncomfortable with conflict, often working to smooth over disagreement rather than escalate it. The flip side commonly attached to this is indecisiveness: weighing every option on the scale for so long that choosing becomes the hard part.

Why Libra is worth learning about even though it's faint

Neither of Libra's main stars is especially bright, and without the story of its Scorpius origins, the "claw" star names are just confusing trivia rather than a clue to an older sky. It's a good example of why constellation boundaries and names carry real history โ€” the shape in the sky changed hands between two completely different symbols, and the star names never got updated to match.
